Decks in the City
Kerri, founder of Decks in the City, discovered my work in a local bar and wanted to bring my illustration style into an idea she had: a range of T-shirts designed to celebrate different communities.
From ADHD and wheelchair users to women in music and Black culture, Kerri had a clear idea of the people she wanted the designs to include. But our conversations quickly showed me that inclusivity wasn’t just something she wanted the brand to communicate. It was part of who she was.
On the walk from the venue to the bench where we started talking, Kerri said hello to almost everyone we passed. She made people feel welcome without even thinking about it. That told me more about the heart of the brand than any brief could have.
The designs needed to feel like Kerri too: inclusive, expressive and full of personality, while still being something people would genuinely want to wear. Together, we explored how her ideas could meet my illustration style to create something with a little humour, a little attitude and a lot of togetherness.
I created a series of illustrative designs celebrating the communities and characters that make up Decks in the City, including Kerri’s favourite, the ’Hands Off My Mix’ T-shirt.
Kerri modelled the design at Africa Oyé, and the range is now preparing to launch. A collection made to remind people that DJing is for everyone.
